Question: Is this called forex?

Hi ppl, is goin to the local bank, checkin the currencies and trading there hoping to get some profit outta currrency trading, is this also called forex trading? what is exactly forex? btw, like the moethod i mentioned b4, is there a free way i can do that on the net? thanks yo
